Race Report: AR50 2009

This is just a partial race report- more later...
On 4/4/2009, the AR50 went off without a hitch. What a fabulous race! The course is stunning, the challenge manageable, great aid stations, and cute little bells and whistles that made the day a huge success. 650 runners started the event, and 510 finished. 200 entrants were first time 50-milers, myself included.
I was a middle-of-the-pack runner, so I can't offer a great report on the front runners, but Scott Dunlap always does a good job of that at http://runtrails.blogspot.com/. I managed to finish in 10:44:50, 15 minutes ahead of my "goal" of 11 hours! But more importantly, the trails were gorgeous, the race was well-flagged with great aid stations, the wildflowers were blooming, good conversations were had, and everyone seemed to have a good time. What more can you ask for?

Hey - I love the post-race picture (well, I hope post-race...but you could open up a whole new genre of "ultra" running if it was pre-race or at Beal's point...one that I might have to try out sometime)

I saw you're running the PCTR 50K on May 9th (I'll be there too and pretty sore I imagine after a fast, cement marathon up in Eureka the weekend before)

See you there and if you're ever interested in getting people together for longer training runs around the Bay, I'd always be interested

Yea - exactly. I've been emailing back and forth with Kevin Sawchuk - a bay area doc and ultrarunning guru - his advice was just to really make sure you get those night runs in and at least a few runs of at least 50. How to approach the midweek training is really by feel was his thoughts.

http://kevinsawchuk.blogspot.com his is site in case you're at all interested

Have you done 100's yet? any advice?

Half-dome is on my list of things to do ASAP - what are your recommendations for an early start? The other roads dont open until 7 right and It seems that its hard to get a campsite on the recreation.gov website... I was looking to start the hike at like 4:30/5am to beat the crowds...where have you stayed the night before?
